I had the pleasure of meeting Rob Stuart way back in his days at Erath Vineyards. Passionate and protective of his wines. I could not have a better introduction to Oregon winemaking!
With a wine thief for each barrel to prevent cross-contamination, Rob walked me through each barrel and how it represented a harvested block of the vineyard. These barrels are for the nose and another set for the body; then the finish. Like a conductor setting up his orchestra, the experience was unforgettable.
These days, Rob has managed to start and grow one of the highest regarded yet still affordable wineries in Oregon! Since 2002 Rob has been making the wines he loves, Pinot Noir, a Pinot Gris, sparkling wine, Rose d’Or. A blended Pinot Noir, Autograph, is considered the quintessential Rob Stuart & Co. Pinot Noir. Lastly, everyday Pinot Noir wines labeled Big Fire and Love, Oregon.
R. Stuart Winery is in a converted granary in downtown McMinnville.
Rob is still protective, and wine, especially in grape form, does not like to travel. So, fruit from 20 vineyards is culled within 32 miles of McMinnville, including several vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs produced each vintage. Big Fire describes his and his wife’s passion for making wine while love should be self-explanatory!
