The 2013 Chardonnay Reserve is a selection of the top 11 barrels made from the estate Chardonnay after spending 10 months in barrel. It then spent another 12 months, on lees, in stainless steel, and there’s a tiny 262 cases produced. It sports a vibrant gold color as well a rich bouquet of golden fruits, citrus, toasted bread, flowers and honeysuckle. It’s beautifully concentrated, has plenty of texture, good acidity and a clean finish. I love its balance and purity, and it’s going benefit from short term cellaring and keep for two decades. For many of us, here is the flagship cuvée of the estate, but more generally, the reference wine for a whole appellation. Vintage after vintage, this Saint-Péray Les Figuiers delivers its superb partition, between roundness, density of matter and mineral tension. A very nice wine of guard and gastronomy.

Here Marsanne and Roussanne are assembled in equal parts. The vines in the Putiers sector benefit from a rare, very calcareous soil at this location, which gives the wine this fine balance between depth and tension. The vintage Les Figuiers is matured in barrels, on fine lees, for 12 months, with about 20% new wood: far from marking the wine, this accurate and measured breeding is at the service of the complexity of the wine and the nuanced expression of its terroir.

From the first nose, the fruit delivers its just maturity, on notes of quince, white peach and apricot, accompanied by fine aromas of acacia honey. The freshness is expressed in pleasant notes of white flowers, anise and lemon. The soil is never far away, with smoky filigree aromas. Unlike many Saint-Joseph neighbors, this Saint-Péray seduced by its delicacy in the mouth: here we are much more in a register of finesse than opulence.

A collaboration with Yves Cuilleron in France’s northern Rhône Valley, the 2015 Syrah Domaine des Chirats Rockpile Vineyard is a sensational, rich, layered Syrah that does everything right. Crème de cassis, blueberries, smoked meats, white flowers and exotic spices all flow to a full-bodied, powerful Syrah that would be a dead-ringer for a top Hermitage. It’s certainly not for those craving lightweight aromas and flavors, but it has extraordinary purity, awesome depth of fruit, and a great, great finish. 93+ Pts Wine Advocate, The 2015 Syrah Rockpile Cuilleron Collaboration is deep garnet-purple colored with quite a savory nose of smoked meats, tapenade, truffles and cardamom over a core of crushed blackberries, crème de cassis and blueberry pie with wafts of mocha and dried herbs.
